Contemporary Rooftop, New York, NY
This downtown roof garden aims to create a safe and peaceful environment that connects with the earth, despite being raised up seven stories into they sky. A balance will be formed between structure, soil, and stone. The linear walls step back from the main gathering area, giving the space a sense of depth. Seating stones are used throughout the garden to accommodate large parties while keeping an organic form. Seating walls emerge from the sloped vegetation to divide up spaces without creating a feeling of enclosure.
The river rock beds will use a different plant vocabulary as the rest of the site, as to form distinct alpine rock gardens. The soil around the garden ungulates wrapping the built structure and raising the pergola covered dining area to maximize the view of the skyline.
