The Green Infrastructure Grant Program, associated with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, authorized $250,000 to expand on a design proposal for the Ascension School.

Located in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the Ascension School is an educational facility that develops the potential of young children through social awareness and critical thinking.

A team of community leaders and design consultants were invited by CDL/G to aid in constructing a proposal for the school. The primary focus of the design was to create a space that allowed children to foster an awareness and appreciation for nature, nutrition and ecology, understanding of nutrition and ecology, while also providing a place for general recreation.

The design of the 6,000 Square Foot rooftop garden integrates function and form. Vegetation is sustained by a strategically designed composting facility, retractable greenhouse, and integrative storm water detention system with two localized rainwater capture systems. An outdoor classroom area and vegetable garden lie adjacent to passive recreational space, providing a number of opportunities for students and faculty.
