IFF Fragrant Forest, New York, NY

IFF Atrium Header

About the work

A two-story entry atrium inside the global headquarters of one of the world’s leading fragrance companies, International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), required a significant remake to match their high-end brand identity and provide occupants with a lush green space. Replacing a series of existing grid-like tree pits, a “forest” of indoor plants was formed within a new series of exposed concrete planters of varying heights and slope that evoke abstracted geological formations, with placeholders built in for seasonal plant swaps to showcase their latest plant-derived fragrances. The existing columns framing one side of the atrium allow climbing vines to reach for the skylight, while the planter outcrops themselves yield three circulation paths to accommodate various users. A meandering path beckons visitors and clientele to explore the fragrant forest for contemplation and discovery. Skirting the forest edge, a bypass path gives employees a direct route to the stairwell and workspaces.

For both the staff and visitors alike, an adjacent “grotto” was created using a combination of angular wood cladding, mossy green mirrors, and shade-tolerant tropical greenery. This modern cove-like space serves as an informal seating hub and allows for flexible modes of gathering. Lastly, a new floor-to-ceiling glass wall between the grotto and the main conference room grant unique views out to this scenic forest backdrop during meetings.
