Upper East Side Penthouse, New York, NY
Located in Manhattan’s Upper East side, the development of the 1000 Square Feet private rooftop garden focused on creating a contemporary retreat that encourages social interaction whilst maintaining a sense of privacy. Anchored to the urban terrain are two ipé decks that are bridged by an irregular cut bluestone path that separates the artificial lawn and the pockets of minimally planted river rock beds. The plexiglass Shoji are multifunctional and are used to screen vent shafts and mechanical units, as well as illuminate the surroundings at night.

This project, initially overwhelmed with visual eyesores of vent shafts and mechanical units, was transformed into contemporary retreat that allows for both passive and active activities without obstructing city views.
