The 2011 graduating senior class of the Lycée Francais de New York, offered an installation of a garden as a ‘green’ gift to their school. Located on the sixth floor terrace, the completed project features over 1000 square feet of planted-in-place native meadow, a scientific work lab, and a student lounge with a series of custom-designed ipé benches. The site is broken into a hierarchy of spaces, arranged according to the structural grid of the building, and programmed based on the adjacent interior functions. Hanging planter baskets and planter boxes were painted in primary colors to add a touch of playfulness to the garden.

A variety of late-summer / early-fall blooming perennials give a dramatic burst of color and texture just as the students begin the school year, and a selection of flowering trees and shrubs bloom in the spring as the school year comes to a close.
