Flowering Fence, Brooklyn, NY
To adorn a tiered contemporary fence building up to an unactivated corner of a deck, a staggering composition of planter boxes was designed to create an interesting flow and focal point. In order to visually ground the space around the main seating elements, rectangular planters were fastened to follow the terraced fence line and give the space a compelling verticality, while also partially screening the neighboring households. The hanging planters also free up much-needed ground space in this petite yard, where simplicity was key. Additionally, the up-down lighting features emphasize the axis linking the ground to the flowering fence while casting stimulating shadows through the foliage.
The chosen plant palette allows for a year-round compelling visual and practical interest with the presence of edible strawberries, evergreen Hellebore, blue fescue grasses, and with several blooming plants bound to cascade down the fence with trailing flowers. As the various plants grow, the space will further gain an insulating quality.
