CD slashSempre Natura

May 29, 2014 – July 11, 2014

Opening Reception: Wednesday, May 28th from 6-8pm

The recently opened Christian Duvernois Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of new work featuring gallery artists. Sempre Natura will explore depictions of nature and organic forms in abstract art. This first group show will illustrate the enduring presence of nature in abstract art and across evolving artistic genres, including drawing, watercolor, painting, print and photography.

The show will feature international artists, from established European postwar abstractionists Gérard Ernest Schneider and Guy de Rougemont to four contemporary artists represented by the gallery: Vicky Colombet, Jian-Jun Zhang, Lucia Papčo, and Barbara Edelstein.

Two large-scale pieces by Barbara Edelstein and Jian-Jun Zhang, both working between Shanghai and New York, will be debuted in the show. The work of Jian-Jun Zhang was included in the recent Metropolitan museum show Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China. Barbara Edelstein’s art establishes a link between low-resolution blown-up photographs and drawings. Both artists’ work reinterprets the traditional Chinese ink painting technique as an inspiration for their vision of nature.

American French-born artist Vicky Colombet will present a medium size painting (Oil, Pigment, alkyd, wax on canvas) and a new “dialogues” series (pigment and drawing on Vellum). In these works she captures a fleeting and mysterious moment in the life of nature. In her exploration of abstraction, the natural world becomes the motive for her imagery and the key to her process.

Pure and timeless, nature is represented in this show in minimalist ways, simplified and unobscured by details—curatorial choices reflecting the overall direction of the Christian Duvernois Gallery.
