Architizer and the New York City AIDS Park Campaign jointly commissioned the NYC AIDS Memorial Park Design Competition, a competition that commemorates those who have been affected by the epidemic.

Christian Duvernois Landscape, in conjunction with Metamechanics LLC, submitted a design proposal that responds to the prevailing crisis and actively engages the general public in the recognition and preservation of the history of AIDS.

Located in the West Village, adjacent to the old St. Vincent’s Hospital, the triangular site is bound by 7th Avenue, Greenwich Avenue, and 12th Street. A constant influx of traffic within the area was a primary concern in the development of the design. To accommodate for this challenge, a joint memorial and public park was designed. The interdisciplinary proposal sought to create a space that integrates two key elements, a space for contemplation and reflection, and a place for connectivity and recreation.

The Memorial Park design features two levels; the first is an open space surrounded by a fractured glass façade, consequently creating a public space that emanates privacy. The second level lies beneath the public park, and is connected by cascade of water that flows throughout the site. The programmatic gradient, from reflective to active, is represented by this continuous channel of flowing water.
