Moroccan Garden, New York, NY

About the project

This Upper East Side courtyard has been redesigned around the installation of a Moroccan inspired fountain. The mosaic work is highlighted among an artificial patch of orange trees, raised cylindrical planters, and a tumbled sandstone ground cover. The perimeter walls of the garden are white washed to lighten up the once dark and damp courtyard. Underneath the staircase, a second smaller fountain adds interest to the passage from the townhouse’s interior to the outdoors.

Outcome

The planters, made from PVC drainage pipe and finished with a sand and paint mixture to simulate an earthen texture, allow the plants more access to a very limited amount of light. This technique, in combination of the artificial orange trees, results in a lush, green foliage-rich garden, despite the dark, urban setting.
