November 17, 2015 – February 13, 2016

Opening Reception: Tuesday, November 17, 2015, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM

NoHo, New York City –Christian Duvernois Gallery is pleased to present the new group exhibition, A Paper Affair, which celebrates the medium of paper and its remarkably heterogeneous use across the works of several artists: Clytie Alexander, Vicky Colombet, Barbara Edelstein, Philippe Gronon, Eric Poitevin and Guy de Rougemont.

Throughout their prolific careers, each of the artists in the exhibition has utilized drawing, collaging, printmaking and/ or photography techniques to create densely layered shapes and associative imagery. The works often combine spontaneous and deliberated gestures and procedures, fusing organic and geometric as well as abstraction and figuration. While some of these artists work solely on paper, others embrace the medium’s many possibilities to further explore their respective creative processes, as well as specific iconographies they have fostered in other bodies of work. The choice to embrace paper’s many possibilities, as much as its common attributions of intimacy, spontaneity, delicacy and humbleness as a specific ground for development of imagination, delivers a myriad of strong artistic statements, entrenching paper as an indeed powerful artistic medium.

Alexander’s radiant collages are a playful take on the artist’s long-term interest in lines, surfaces, their edges and boundaries, motion and stillness and our perception of colors and their symbolic potentials. Similar interests, but on a different scale and in the medium of printmaking, resonate in vibrant, almost psychedelic patterns in the serigraphies by de Rougemont. “A Dialogue” series of Colombet are mixed media works that juxtapose ink drawing and oil and pigment compositions, to reveal complex methods of delivering evocative landscape imagery. Edelstein’s works embrace both photography and drawing in depicting natural details such as trees, light and shadows, simultaneously blurring and revealing the media distinctive properties.

The exhibition also features, for the first time at the Gallery, the photographic series by Eric Poitevin and Philippe Gronon. Gronon’s Manure series –piles of manure captured in different bucolic locations- reference historical landscape paintings, but on an intimate scale and in subtle tones of black and white photography. Poitevin’s photographic compositions are abstracted close-ups of the bottoms of the flower pots, capturing the roots of plants and their vivid lines and networks.

In connection to the exhibition A Paper Affair, we are also excited to announce our participation at the Art on Paper Art Fair, in New York, from March 3-6, 2016
