Case Study Series

In 2007, I began working with clay, after a number of years primarily working with the human figure using wax and bronze. Initially, I was attracted to simple, rustic and utilitarian ceramic forms, which I saw in street markets while travelling in Mexico and Colombia. Gradually, as I continued working with clay in my studio in New York, the sculptures began to take on the character of structures related to shelters or buildings. They provided a sense of location and space that the figures alone could not. The sculptures from the series, “Case Study,” were inspired by the experimental homes commissioned by Arts & Architectural Magazine in the 1950s. One of these homes was just down the street from where I formally lived in Los Angeles. I was attracted to the sense of transparency in the architecture, creating a fluid transition between interior and exterior space that produced a tension that defied their boundaries. My recent sculptures contrast this fluid sense of space with the solid weight and mass of the material to express their form. There is a strange mixture and tension between a space influenced by modernist thinking and weight expressed through rustic forms and structures. Sculptures are composed of structural elements that may appear stylistically dissonant, yet exist together, as in life in a de facto partnership.

These sculptures are made from a course clay, gas-fired to cone 10.

With a focus to experience the nature of the sculptures, my works on paper are imagined as views looking out from the sculptures, rather than depictions of objects. Through the work on paper, I imagine how the sculpture may influence space beyond their measured dimensions or how I might feel moving through the space they describe. They are done to free my thoughts from any physical limitations the sculptures might impose and explore new relationships within the work. Mixed media is a favorite technique as it allows me the flexibility to cut and reassemble the drawings. Recognizing some unique quality during the progress of a work, guides me in stepping back while illuminating the particular quality the piece dictates.
